Glimpses of Israel - The Temple Mount

by Joseph Hunting

What memories crowd into the area of Jerusalem known as the Temple Mount!

It was on this mount, nearly four thousand years ago, Abraham prepared an altar for the sacrifice of his son, Isaac.

It was on this mount that God provided a lamb as the substitute for Isaac and confirmed his covenant to Abraham: "By Myself have I sworn, saith the Lord, for because you have done this thing, and have not withheld your son, your only son, that in blessing I will bless you, and in multiplying, I will multiply your seed as the stars of the heaven, and as the sand which is upon the sea shore, and your seed shall possess the gate of his enemies; AND IN YOUR SEED SHALL ALL THE FAMILIES OF THE EARTH BE BLESSED, because you have obeyed My Voice." (Genesis 22:16-18)

It was on this mount, nearly a thousand years later, David purchased the threshing floor from Araunah the Jebusite and sacrificed burnt offerings unto the Lord.

It was on this mount Solomon constructed the Temple exactly as God commanded, and in which His Shekinah Presence then came to dwell.

It was on this mount that the armies of Nebuchadnezzar defiled the Holy place by removing the Ark of the Covenant before destroying the Temple and the Holy City on the 9th day of Av, 586 B.C.

It was on this mount God provided the Lamb as the substitute for all mankind and confirmed the long-promised New Covenant: "Behold the days come, saith the Lord, that I will make a new covenant with the house of Israel, and the house of Judah, not according to the covenant that I made with them when I brought them by the hand out of Egypt, which My covenant they brake ..." (Jeremiah 31:31).

It was on this mount that the armies of Rome again defiled the Holy Place with the destruction of the Temple and Jerusalem on the 9th day of Av, 70 A.D.

It was on this mount nearly nineteen centuries later, on the 7th June, 1967, that the soldiers of Israel liberated Jerusalem from 2,500 years of Gentile overlordship highlighting the words of Israel's Messiah, "Jerusalem shall be trodden down of the Gentiles UNTIL the times of the Gentiles be fulfilled." (Luke 21:24)
