Glimpses of Israel - Faces of Jerusalem

Few pastimes could be more fascinating than observing the faces of the throngs which stream through the Damascus or Jaffa gates in Old Jerusalem. Of Jews and Arabs there is no lack of variety, for to both Jerusalem is more than just another city. In the space of a few minutes more nationalities could pass by these gates than at any other place on earth. No other city is so deeply enshrined in the heart of so many.
The narrow streets of the city wind through it like intricate patterns on a tapestry. In one we asked an Arab lad delivering a side of meat what kind of animal it was. He replied, "camel." I made a metal note not to order grilled chops at any of the local restaurants!
Jerusalem is the heart of the vigorously growing newly-born state of Israel, and this heart throbs with vibrant life. But transcending all the charm and attraction of this City is the underlying spiritual strength that has sustained Jerusalem. "Behold, I have graven thee upon the palms of My hands; thy walls are continually before Me." (Isaiah 49:16) "For the Lord hath chosen Zion; He hath desired it for His habitation. This is My rest for ever: here will I dwell for I have desired it." (Psalm 132:13-14)
