Editorial - What Of The Future?

by Joy Hunting

How can we assess the hopelessly wide range of reactions to recent events in the Middle East? How can we understand what God's purposes are in these same events? What following events can we anticipate? And where will it all end?

Of one thing we can be certain: God knows the end from the beginning; He knows the bottom line. What's more, He has the power to bring about His purposes because He is so great, as the Psalmist tells us: "The LORD builds up Jerusalem; he gathers the outcasts of Israel ... he counts the number of the stars; he calls them all by name. Great is our Lord, and mighty in power" (Psalm 147:2,4,5).

The people of Israel, and indeed Jewish people worldwide, have a wonderful heritage in the Word of God, and for this reason, as they "search the Scriptures" for themselves, they should be able to tap into God's mind and plans for the future as no other nation on earth is privileged to do, for "he declares his word to Jacob, his statutes and his judgements to Israel. He has not dealt thus with any nation; and as for his judgements, they have not known them" -- this we read at the end of the same psalm.

The opinions and decisions of even world leaders are relatively unimportant in comparison with the special advantages to be achieved in reading God's Word and believing "all that the prophets have spoken" . And the Jewish people have this special advantage.

Even Moses exhorted his people at the end of his life: " ... I have set before you life and death, blessing and cursing; therefore choose life ... that you may love the LORD your God, that you may obey his voice, and that you may cling to him, for he is your life ..." (Deuteronomy 30:19,20).

So, choosing LIFE and blessing, just as Moses stated, and clinging to the Lord as the LIFE of His people Israel will ensure a peace and confidence in the future that will be attainable in no other way. "You will keep him in perfect peace whose mind is stayed on yu" (Isaiah 26:3).
