One still hears armchair strategists maintaining that Israel should relinquish its control of the so called West Bank which should be known by its Biblical name, Judea and Samaria. The term 'West Bank' was coined by Jordan after it had illegally annexed the area following the War of Independence in 1948.

The PLO is stepping up its lobby in the UN for a Palestinian state which will occupy Judea, Samaria and the Gaza Strip. The PLO also makes no secret of the fact that this is only a stage for the total destruction of the state of Israel.

According to ISRAEL'S TERRITORIAL IMPERATIVES (Dawn Publishing Co. Quebec), "The Arabs today possess the largest and most modern arsenal of weaponry in the world aside from the U.S. and the Soviet Union. They have acquired this vast arsenal at a cost of hundreds of billions of dollars ostensibly with one paramount objective -- the destruction of the state of Israel.

"Air defence radar, situated on the heights of Judea and Samaria affords the Israel Air Force just fifteen minutes' warning in the event of an Arab air attack. Without these installations Israel would have only about four minutes in which to scramble its fighters to meet the attack. Israel could not protect its cities from devastating air bombardment given four minutes' warning time.

"In time of war the possession of critical blocking positions ... and the retention of key terrain are of paramount importance. Israel's continued possession of the Gaza Strip, Judea and Samaria, as well as the Golan Heights, can be militarily equated to significant numbers of battle-ready divisions, squadrons of modern combat aircraft, and above all, avoiding countless thousands of military and civilian casualties as well as destroyed cities."

ISRAEL 'S UNIQUENESS

Israel 's position among the nations is unique. When the Nazis were engaged in their plan for a THIRD REICH it was a plan for world domination of a thousand year duration. And that plan included the total extermination of world Jewry. Haman and Hitler were true stable mates. And in both instances their diabolical plans failed with their own destruction.

The rebirth of the state of Israel is unique. Despite the opposition of the British government at the time, plus the naval blockade to prevent 'illegal' immigrants, plus the implacable hatred of the surrounding Arab states and their avowed declaration to completely destroy any infant Jewish state should it ever come to the birth, a miracle happened. And all the world wondered at the miracle of Israel's survival.

Her continued survival over the past 42 years is also unique. In spite of unrelenting terrorist attacks, and three further wars in which she has had to fight for survival, Israel continues to this day as the homeland for world Jewry. Whilst one doesn't detract from the magnificent effort by Israel to defend itself against such overwhelming odds there are two other factors which have made Israel's survival unique. The Bible states that "He that keeps Israel neither slumbers nor sleeps" and "No weapon that is formed against thee (Israel) shall prosper" (Psalm 21:4; Isaiah 54:17).

Israel 's capital, Jerusalem, is unique, "For the Lord has chosen Zion, He has desired it for His habitation" (Psalm 132:13). Although Israel's claim to Jerusalem as its capital dates back 3,000 years, almost without exception scores of countries bowed to Arab pressure and slunk off to Tel Aviv with their embassies in 1973. No other nation has suffered such humiliation concerning recognition of its capital.

In the face of the foregoing it would result in national suicide if Israel were to yield to international pressure to trade all or even part of the land that God ceded to them for "He has remembered His covenant for ever, the word which He commanded to a thousand generations, which covenant He made with Abraham, and His oath unto Isaac; and confirmed the same unto Jacob ... for a everlasting covenant: saying, Unto you will I give the land of Canaan, the lot of your inheritance" (Psalm 105:8-11).
